Amos Biscuit

Amos arrived at Angels of Assisi yesterday, skinny, hungry, and begging to drink out of the sink. According to his blood work, he has an awful infection brewing, and it's hard to say when his last meal was. We've had to feed him small amounts of food at a time, and are concerned that he is not keeping all of it down.

A special thank you to Amanda and John for taking him for x-rays, and giving him nourishment in the form of TLC until we figure out what is happening and he can eat like a real dog again.

Like many before, Amos was brought to Angels of Assisi by Botetourt Animal Control, and will benefit from the Biscuit Fund. Thanks to all who have been and will be involved in his rescue.

A Lovely Biscuit

Pandora was turned in to the Roanoke pound, covered in sores that were bleeding. She needed medical care, and they gave us a call (thank you). Here she is on day one, after a bath and medications. Despite being in a lot of pain, she was always quiet and sweet.

Turns out, this little gal is allergic to just about everything, including some stuff found on human skin. Hence the big question: how is a human supposed to take care a neglected dog, when such a dog is allergic to such a human?

Well, there are these little things called allergy shots. Angels of Assisi provided those, and a very awesome lady named Toni provided special food, a lot of TLC, and now a foster home. Looks like it was just what this girl needed; take a look at her today. Under Toni's gentle care, she is flourishing.

Pandora is yet another who has been helped by all those who donate to the Biscuit Fund, all those who helped care for her in the adoption center, and now by her loving foster home. In short, the kindness of people in the Roanoke Valley saved her, and we think you all rock. Big time.

Faith is raising the sail of our little boat until it is caught up in the soft winds above and picks up speed, not from anything within itself, but from the vast resources of the universe around us.

Update on the Christmas Biscuits

Right before Christmas, we put out a plea for 2 dogs at the Roanoke pound, who were thin and heartworm positive. You all answered loud and clear, and their plight even hit K92's morning show (thank you, Danny!). Many offers of help came in, and the girls were whisked off into foster homes within a few days.

One month later, the girls are back, and doing great! Maggie is sweet and laid back, and is a quiet, old soul type of dog.

Ellie, on the other hand, is a bundle of happy energy. Her tail was wagging in her original intake photo above, and it rarely stops.

Thank you to all who came to their rescue; we especially appreciate their foster families for getting them into tip top shape. The girls are so much better, and back at Angels of Assisi getting ready to start heartworm treatment. What a difference a month has made, and we can't wait to see the rest of the journey.

This friendly little guy was ear tipped somewhere along the way. "Ear tipping" is the universal sign that a feral cat has been spayed/neutered.

Handsome Neo is staying with us until his family figures out their housing situation. He is 10 years old, and since his arrival has been neutered and had some major dental work done. In a few weeks, he will start heart worm treatment, not an easy process. We're hoping he can get back to his real home soon, or the process of finding another will be easier than the time he is having now. Hang in there buddy.

An Important Step Towards No Kill

An important bill to support trap-neuter-return (TNR) programs for feral cats in Virginia was recently introduced in the Virginia legislature. S.B. 359, sponsored by Sen. Deeds, is scheduled for a hearing by the Senate Agriculture Committee tomorrow (1/19).

Virginia law has long been murky on the subject of TNR. Not long after Voices for Animals began a TNR program, the state vet informed us that we could be charged with abandonment -- for returning cats to their colonies after they were sterilized and vaccinated. And while many enlightened animal control agencies actively support TNR, that's not the case in all parts of Virginia, and many dedicated animal advocates have heard similar threats from their local agencies.

Needless to say, the last thing any Virginia community needs is barriers to progressive spay/neuter programs.

S.B. 359 would add a new subsection to the animal care provisions of the Virginia Code: "§ 3.2-6504.1. Trap, Neuter, and Return programs.

Nothing in this chapter shall be construed to prohibit the

(i) proper trapping or capture;

(ii) holding;

(iii) provision of care, including but not limited to sterilization, vaccination, microchipping, or eartipping;

(iv) release or return to the trapping site or colony; or

(v) long-term feeding and care at the colony of a feral cat as part of a formal Trap, Neuter, and Return program operated by a pound, animal shelter, humane society, or other releasing agency."

Unfortunately, some wildlife organizations are opposing this bill under the misguided belief that TNR means choosing cats over wildlife. Our state senators need to hear from you today that TNR is both a humane and commonsense approach to reducing feral cat populations in the long term.

Reunited, And It Feels So Good

This adorable Labradoodle was at the Roanoke Pound. He was transferred to Angels of Assisi yesterday, and came face to face with a most pleasant surprise.

His twin! While an Assisi volunteer was picking up Dexter from the Pound, another dog who looks just like him was being surrendered to our adoption center. We don't know for sure if they are related, but they are the same age and sure do look alike. The brothers immediately started romping and playing, and have not stopped since.

They are in foster care now, but will ready for adoption soon. A big thank you to the staff at the Roanoke Pound for transferring Dexter to Angels of Assisi! We love him, and are delighted to have double the trouble!

Partners and Friends

A few days ago, the Roanoke Pound put out a plea for help. They were getting low on space, and needed some big dogs sprung or they would be killed.

No surprise, the Franklin County Humane Society jumped into action. They networked the dogs, they asked others for help, and they transported 4 of them to their No Kill adoption center.

It is very important to note the magnitude of what happens within the walls of the Franklin County Humane Society. On a daily basis, they have their own local pound to save dogs and cats from- many. They routinely find animals at the local dumpster- yes, the dumpster. Last week they found one puppy, and searched frantically for a second that was scared and ran away. They help surrounding high kill pounds. They assist with chained dogs. They have feral cat issues. They have a very busy low cost spay and neuter clinic. They constantly fund-raise, a challenge in the present economy. Yet, with all this going on, they jumped in, crossed county lines, and rescued these 4 dogs, with willing hands and cheerful hearts.

That's why we love them so, and will continue to look at them for guidance and inspiration. Thank you to all the staff and volunteers who pitched in. We've got one word for you: hero.

Annie, Annie, Annie...where to start?

We first heard about Annie years ago, from her guardian angel. She was originally rescued with a group of Hurricane Katrina victims, and was being being boarded in the Roanoke area. Months turned into many more months, and Angels of Assisi was eventually asked for help.

Annie had many quirks and issues, but dang it all, she had survived heart worm treatment and a disaster of the worst kind, she needed another chance. We were all a bit worried when she arrived at the adoption center, but she settled right in and even let Vickie get this awesome photo of her.

As it turns out, we had a big adoption event at the Roanoke Home and Garden Show, and on a whim took Annie. As she quietly sat in her crate in the back of our booth, she caught the eye of a handsome young guy named Joe. Somehow, someway, he saw past everything and thought she was absolutely wonderful. We explained her issues, and that she would do best with a fenced yard. He stated that while he did not have one, he and his family owned a construction company and could "knock one out over the weekend". Umm, okay...Deal!

A trip to PetSmart for her supplies was completed, and the next day he picked her up.

That was 3 years ago, and every year we look for Joe and Annie at the Home Show. Joe still think she is the most beautiful dog ever. He got married, and his household now includes a cat, and they all get along great. Apparently the cat is an expert at knocking food off the counter for Annie to gobble up, and they are a terrific team of entertainment.

We will be forever grateful to Joe for loving Annie. They give us hope and trust that there can indeed be a place for all, not only in our hearts, but in newly fenced in homes as well.

When Life Happens

A few days ago, a lady came down our adoption center steps, clutching a cat carrier and sobbing. Life circumstances had changed beyond her control, and she had to give up her beloved cat, Benji.

Our cat census, as usual, was full. Did we have room for a 12 year old cat? Not really. But sometimes Life really does happen to people, and the little voice of your soul persistently whispers "there, but for the grace of God, go I". As it becomes increasingly louder, suddenly there is ample space and resources available for Benji as he awaits his new home.

Tears of desperation turned into tears of gratitude, and the senior cat was officially signed over to Angels of Assisi. He came with toys, treats, and a letter to his new family, explaining all his qualities and quirks. Benji head butted the front of his kennel, purred a little, and curled up for a nap.

Later that night, his owner called. Her youngest son had not realized the severity of her situation, and offered to take Benji home to live out his remaining years. She arrived the next morning to gather her beloved cat, and we almost did not recognize her. Gone was the worry; she stood taller and a beaming smile lit up her face. We wished them both well, returning the smile tenfold.

Good luck, little Benji. You got your life back sooner than hoped, and that little voice inside our soul said "See? Told ya so."

Lonesome

Meet the new guy. He is scared and having a hard time figuring out how he landed at the Roanoke pound last month. One of his main issues is trusting people, but little does he know that a network of them worked hard to ensure a better future for him.

Thank you to the RCACP staff for opening the doors early today, so we could pick him for the transfer to Angels of Assisi. Too scared to go in a crate, he rode in the front seat with his head pressed into my shoulder, and his paw implanted into my right hand. His trembling subsided during the ride, and he was content to look out at the big world bathed in sunshine, the world that is now his as well.

Lonesome will go to his new foster home tomorrow, and it seems like a name change is in order. After all, this is the dog lucky enough to have the caring RCACP staff and volunteers look out for him, along with numerous offers of Angels of Assisi foster homes. He hasn't quite processed all that love yet, but in time, he will.

Rabbits On A Roll

Our motto at Angels of Assisi is the preservation of life for all animals, and apparently many others agree, especially for the bunnies as of late.

They have a new condo, thanks to some very hard work by Taylor Early. This massive and awesome display in the adoption center was part of Taylor's Eagle Scout Project, and he knocked it out of the park! The amount of planning, fundraising, designing, and construction was astronomical, and we all appreciate his efforts very much!

As the bunnies have received more attention, adoptions have increased. One special lady, who adopted a special needs rabbit, returned today loaded with toys, treat, home-made hay bins, litter pans, chew toys and a very generous donation for their care.

We are once again overwhelmed with the generosity of our community. And seriously, how cute are they in their new diggs?

I alternately love and hate this photo.

I love it because it depicts life, brand new sleeping next to seasoned. Both of the dogs in this photo, one a baby and one elderly, are equally precious and cherished. The puppy is all spanking new, curious, and innocent. She has strength and flexibility in her youthful bones that can take a tumble during the course of a good romping play.

The older dog has seen her fair share of heartache, but her life took a turn for the better one very special March day. She is hard of hearing, a little disoriented, and has bowed legs. Her bones are brittle, and special precautions are taken to make sure she won't tumble. She's not so much curious anymore, but still innocent. As a senior, she brings about an easy familiarity; "Old dogs, like old shoes, are comfortable. They might be a bit out of shape and a little worn around the edges, but they fit well."

Looking into her pretty gray face makes your heart clench up a little, wondering how many more days you'll have the opportunity to do so. In actuality, what I hate about the photo is the glaring mortality of it all. I hate the fact that our pets do not live longer, and leave us before we are ready to let them go.

As harsh as an animal's circle of life is, at least we know the reality. Their time on earth is shorter than ours. We don't often have to grasp this concept with our human peers, and today is especially hard with the loss of Ann Marie.

Ann Marie was the foster coordinator for the Roanoke Valley SPCA, and that family is saying goodbye to their beloved friend. I did not know Ann Marie well, but when the media attention hit about the Roanoke Pound, she was the one who reached out to us and tried to make sense of it. I never knew if she was assigned the task or it was a self appointed role, but she extended the olive branch with courage and a willingness to listen. I absolutely do know that she had a wonderful sense of humor, a heart of gold for the animals, and was well respected by all for her kind and gentle manner.

Cancer did not give Ann Marie the chance to get old, and the glaring face of mortality strikes again. It reminds us to cherish each day, and stay close to those that love us. Let's leave the self importance and drama behind, and stay strong and focused for the important things in life.

In Ann Marie's honor, please consider fostering a homeless animal. Karen Crawford started us off when she picked up Sebastian from the Roanoke pound a few days ago. He had been mourning his owners since they left him there, and now it is his turn to take a turn for the better.

While we do our part here on earth, my guess is that Ann Marie will find her place at the Rainbow Bridge, tending to those that were taken from us too soon. The ones that, like her, did not have the chance to grow old. And she'll take care of them with the kind and gentle manner she is so well known for.

May they all rest in peace, and may a part of them live through the very best parts of us.

Max joined our family back in June. We adopted him on June 13th. Its hard to believe we've only had him for 6 months. It feels like he has a been a part of our family for much longer!

Max weighed 10 pounds when we got him and he was extremely skiddish and shy but quickly bonded with me. Now he is my little shadow. We think there must have been some "man" issues in his past that we don't know about because Max still doesn't openly and freely give my husband a tail wag or kisses, although he is better with him now than 6 months ago. My husband is determined to keep trying and eventually win Max over.

Max now weighs 12.8 pounds and is full of energy, although he would be happy to just sit in my chair right up against me all day. He is a great companion and only wants love and affection!

Remember this scared little pup looking for a foster home before Christmas?

Thanks to an amazing team of volunteers, she found one. Look at our girl now.

Her name is Maggie, and her foster mom says she is a wonderful dog. She already knew some basic tricks, and is content to sit next to her humans and soak in all the TLC she can.

Now that she is stronger, Maggie is getting ready to start her heartworm treatment. Thank you to all who made her rescue possible, and especially to her foster mom, Ann.

Something that has always puzzled me all my life is why, when I am in special need of help, the good deed is usually done by somebody on whom I have no claim.

New Year's Eve morning, 2011, found me at my home away from home, visiting some of my favorite four legged friends. Some may say taking care of a group of animals is a lot of work, but I call it rejuvenating the soul with those who love back unconditionally.

It was a beautiful start to the end of the year, with an oxymoron of bright sunshine and dark clouds, mixed with just enough rain to make everything sparkle. The addition of this double rainbow made all in the world seem right.

It was symbolic- the old year fading out, a memory of goals accomplished, and some dreams not quite into fruition yet. And a new year coming in, loud and clear. Beautiful. Another chance to make it right, or at least better, led off with an inspiration of wonder, hope, and promise.

It has been a pleasure and a privilege to work with you all this year. We cherish each friend and your individual contributions to the common goal of making this world a better one for the innocent animals in our care. Together, we'll make this trip around the sun the best ever for them, and in the process, better for ourselves as well.

Bunny Love

At Angels of Assisi, bunnies are always part of the adoption floor landscape. Floppy ears and fuzzy tails, who can resist? We are very fortunate to have a good friend named Holly, who fosters and promotes them for adoption. Frances is her right hand lady in the process, and the bunnies are definitely benefiting from their efforts. Here's the story of Buddy:

Thought you would like to know how much Buddy has become a part of our family. He loves to roam around in the living room with us every evening & is so cute when he (literally) follows my 3 year old grandson around like a puppy (under supervision of course). When I am sitting on the floor he jumps up on my lap & puts his front paws on my chest. My husband loves how he comes up & puts his paws up on his leg so he will pick him up. He really is the most remarkable bunny I've ever seen. Thank you so much for what you do & rest assured this bunny has been placed in a good home.

Our little building on 415 Campbell Avenue certainly felt the warmth of the holiday season, with a record number of donations and adoptions. Thank you to all who pitched in for the animals: food donations, on-line donations, toys and gifts for the pets, volunteer hours and foster homes, all were extraordinary and very much appreciated.

We were also touched by those who brought nourishment for the staff, in the form of holiday treats, cards, and kind words. We've been lucky to add some wonderful people to the team this year. In particular, Dr. Phillips has made our Assisi family feel complete; if you have not met her yet, you need to. She is a delightful combination of cowboy boots, enthusiasm, some type of southern drawl that us Yankees find seriously charming, and a knowledge and passion for the animals that fits in with the Assisi mission like white on rice.

Most of all, we have been relieved and overjoyed with the number of pets who now know the meaning of the word "home", especially some of our long timers:

Boomer - arrived at Angels of Assisi in October 2010, and is now enjoying the comforts of a warm stove and loving family.

Buster- one of 103 animals from the Bedford Rescue. Happy in foster this holiday.

Butterscotch- recently rescued from the Roanoke pound, where she was terrified to the point that she had to be carried out of her kennel. She is now happy in a long term foster home, and loves playing and soaking up much needed TLC.

Krispy- long term resident at Angels of Assisi, now home and apparently loving her new bed!

Mabel- senior pit bull from the Franklin County pound. The Franklin County Society never gave up on her, and she was recently adopted form Angels of Assisi to an awesome family up north.

And Ms. Piggy- sprung from the confines of a cat kennel in the adoption center, and is now the official Office Cat. She is doing an awesome job of assessing all the donations, monitoring the front window, and napping on Dr. Spangler's office chair.

We have enjoyed our time with you all this last year very much. Thank you for showing the true meaning of Christmas, not only this December, but all the year through.

Little do these homeless souls know that as the Assisi clinic is preparing for their medical needs, a community is rallying together to provide everything else they have been deprived of- food, shelter, toys, beds, and a family of their own.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas.

The Person I Admire

Camryn Sullivan is an average kid in Southwest Virginia, with an extraordinary heart. She follows the stories of homeless pets in our area, especially the ones at Angels of Assisi. We tend to have the "less desirable" pets: the old ones, the one-eyed ones, the hairless ones, the sick and neglected ones.

Yet in Camryn's view, these are the Ones that are even more precious and deserving of love. This girl and her sister have made scrapbooks of such animals and followed their journey, and I give her parents a lot of credit for their encouragement and letting her follow her heart (and also for the tremendous amount of printer ink she uses!). They have opened their home to several needy pets, and for that we are very grateful.

I admire Camryn Sullivan because she embraces the flaws in these animals as beyond special. She loves them, and does everything in her youthful optimism and power to not only save them, but give each a sense of belonging. She believes that they are unique and absolutely matter, and because of that, they do.

The world of rescue is a tough one, filled with heartbreak and loss. I personally know many people in this realm who work tirelessly to ensure a safe future for neglected, abused and just plain homeless pets. It's at times frustrating and always hard. What you need to know is that you are laying a solid foundation for the Camryn's who are watching, learning, and will carry on the mission. Our job is to outline a blueprint for the next generation and trust that they will run with it and make this earth a safe place, filled with companionship and respect for those who have no voice.

Camryn represents the hope that it will happen. She's not going to lose her kind heart, the one that seeks out those that need her most. She will continue to be inspired by those less fortunate, and act to make a change for the better. She gives the phrase "together we can make a difference" a new meaning, a depth, a future. It's not just us in this crazy world trying to do good, but a whole new group of caring citizens getting ready to take it the next level, and I believe they are going to do it. In so many ways, they already have.

The young do not know enough to be prudent, and therefore they attempt the impossible, and achieve it, generation after generation.

The Beagle Biscuits- a mama and nine puppies- were seized and brought to Angels of Assisi last July. They arrived in a Botetourt Animal Control truck, confused and in need of serious medical care.

While Dr. Spangler checked each pup, Mama Beagle stayed close to the officer's feet, seeming to know she was safe and help had finally arrived. Little did we know how symbolic this photo of her would be.

We named her Patience, because that is exactly what she was. She helped her puppies heal, but her process was slower. Mama loved being with people, and was constantly at your feet, like a shadow, never wanting to be left alone. Try as we might, the clinic was no replacement for a real family... except when Amanda came.

Ever have a person in your life whom you can count on no matter what? That's Amanda. She is our biggest cheerleader, a steadfast foster home, and a friendly force behind the mission. If Amanda says she is going to do something, she'll toss up a batch of persistence, reliability, and kindness, and hit an ace every time.

Amanda and her wonderful husband made special trips to take Patience for walks, but quickly learned that sitting together on the floor was exactly what the little beagle needed most. Life in those moments was good, and since she could not leave our building, it was family time. For the months between July and December, it had to be enough.

The big court day finally arrived last Thursday and the proceedings ended fast and in the best possible case scenario; the beagles were turned over to Angels of Assisi. Free at last- free to go outside, free to go to the dog park, free to go home. And how fitting is it that Mama Beagle, Patience, was the first to go.

Update On Rosey Biscuit

Rosey Biscuit is on the mend! She is in a wonderful foster home, and is flourishing with the all extra care and love that she is receiving. What a difference a few weeks has made, not only on the outside, but for healing her soul as well.

We think she looks absolutely beautiful in her green sweater, and seeing photos like this make all the heartache involved with rescue so very worthwhile. It also helps negate the 'irresponsible public' argument once again. Yes, there were awful circumstances that allowed Rosey to get in the condition she was in. Perhaps an awful owner, or perhaps someone who did not know better: that is up to the court system to decide. But for that one awful person, many more stepped up to help- including her wonderful foster parents- and they have made all the difference in her world.

This is our first partnership with Roanoke Animal Control, and we look forward to working together in the future. Thank you all for your dedication and hard work.

Bouncing Beagle Biscuit Bonanza

After a series of legal proceedings, they had another very important court date yesterday. Much was at stake, and many worried about their future.

It's true!! The baby beagles and mama are finally ready for adoption. Please come meet them, take them to the dog park, give them lots of TLC, and consider fostering or adopting. These babies have grown up in the shelter, and are very sweet and smart.

We will post more of their story in the coming week. For now, we thank Vickie Holt for the photos that made all the difference in court, along with Beverly, Inglath, Amanda, Sarah, Trish, Zach, Tim, Courtney, Alex, Bobbie, Dr. Spangler, and Jill. Together each of you has played an enormous part in saving these innocent lives, and our hearts are forever grateful.

This young lad was transferred to Angels of Assisi from the Roanoke pound today. At 6 months old, he has a happy spirit and good heart under this severe skin infection. His foster home is waiting with a new bed and toys, and he'll be given that chance to heal.

A special thank you to Libby and Bobbie for being relentless in saving him- you did it. Now for the job of rehabilitation and finding a new home.

Once again, we are thankful for those that support the Biscuit Fund and make happy endings for neglected and sick animals.

The arrival of 2 small dogs from South Carolina sent me to Angels of Assisi late tonight, and sometimes staying up past bedtime is pretty darn rewarding.

Carter and Lilly arrived around 10 pm, and they are wonderful. Lilly is a little Chihuahua mix who was rescued by a former Humane Society worker. This compassionate lady now works for the utility company, and uses her position to watch out for the animals on her route. She found Lilly tethered with a huge chain weighing down her tiny body, and convinced the owners to sign her over to safety.

Carter was rescued with several other Pomeranian dogs, and he actually has black and white stripes around his body- so cute. He seems to love being held and is very laid back and sweet; he even stayed still for me to take this horrible cell phone shot:

On the drive to Assisi, my phone was buzzing with messages about a dog that needs foster, a pending cat rescue, and an important message from Vickie Holt. She had just sent updated pictures of the 10 beagles that were seized last July. They have a very special day tomorrow that will most likely decide their fate. I do not doubt that Vickie had been working on the photos all evening.

Our building at 415 Campbell Avenue was dark when I arrived, and after the alarm was silenced and lights turned on, our office cat, Miss Piggy, gave me a sleepy salutation from her perch on the counter. She was sharing her space with the clipboards neatly lined up, ready and waiting for a full spay/neuter clinic tomorrow.

The cat colony rooms were quiet and peaceful. In the back hallway one of our newest additions, Mowgli the bull dog, snored away in his kennel. Turns out that Dr. Spengler's foster dog has some pretty serious skin issues, and he is staying with us to receive treatment. Next to his kennel lay a new leash, treats, and special dog food. Watching him sleep, one word pops into my mind: innocent. I wonder how long he had been out own his own, and am grateful that he is safe.

Next stop was through the break room, where notes for staff adorn a bulletin board and Miss Piggy has a pretty sweet set up in the front window. Someone had brought in cake, and there is perhaps a little tiny piece missing (thanks!).

A visit to mama beagle was next, and she was delighted for the company. She has lived in the clinic since last July, and the staff loves her and takes very good care of her. I hugged our girl tight, and gave her an extra smooch from Amanda. Mama always has a worried look on her face, and I tried to tell her how hard people have been working to ensure she has a better life. The folks in charge of her future have worried right along with her. However, at some point, you have to believe that diligence will pay off, and right will win over wrong. Tomorrow will tell.

As I ventured down to the adoption center, the dogs and cats started perking up- they are certainty not used to company in the middle of the night. Kittens were snuggled up next to each other in cushy beds, and puppies stretched and yawned. Most of the cats gave me a one eyed look, while others pushed to the fronts of their cages and purred for attention. The fact that they are so trusting and sure that I won't hurt them is not lost on me.

I settled the new guys in, made sure Lilly had her sweater and beloved toy duck, and turned off the lights once again. Heading back to the front door, I stopped, took a mental picture and inhaled the enormity of what happens in our building and beyond everyday.

Just tonight, a snapshot in time, there was a network of staff and volunteers working on court cases, looking for foster homes, taking care of their own foster pets, and planning a major meeting with other rescue groups to take place in a week. We have a clinic that is ready and waiting for a full day of spay and neuter surgeries tomorrow, not to mention wellness appointments booked every 15 minutes. In other words, the clinic staff is ready to serve the responsible pet owners in our community, while the adoption staff and volunteers care for the animals that are our responsibility. These duties often overlap, and are always handled with care.

More than anything, we love the people who get it all done, everyday, and enjoy what they do. Are we perfect? No. Is there room for improvement and growth? Of course. But we will grow and improve, and along the way we'll embrace each other and the animals we love. And we'll believe that diligence will pay off, and the right thing will happen for all the innocent lives that are trusting in us.

When such bull dog has horrible hips, a terrible skin condition, is almost blind, and needs some major medical care? Why, we'll send him to foster with our very own most awesome Dr. Spangler, that's what we'll do!

Meet Mowgli, the sweetest guy ever. He is in foster care with Dr. Spangler, and she is treating his medical conditions and giving him all the TLC he deserves. Mowgli is yet another that will benefit from the Biscuit Fund; a lifesaver to many.

Buddy went to a foster home over the weekend, and all appears to be going quite well. His foster mom reports that he is the perfect dog, but gets anxious when left alone. Seems like Buddy is making sure his boy Dylan won't be going anywhere for a while, and they both look quite comfortable.

The good folks who open their homes to pets in need will always hold a very special place in our hearts. Angles of Assisi and other rescue groups do the best we can with our various adoption centers, but there is nothing like a real family.

And so we thank you, and know that, in reality, besides giving comfort, providing safety, taking a chance, being loved, feeling at home and having the character to change the world, one step at a time, what else is really important?

Last week, I took a walk through the Roanoke pound to meet a few dogs on the list to be transferred to Angels of Assisi. As always, the RCACP staff was kind and courteous when I asked to see every dog in the building. There were the usual big and small canines, all jumping up at their kennel doors looking for attention. We set a pretty good pace up and down the aisles, patting pit bulls, smiling at howling hound dogs, and admiring shepherds. And then we came across Chrissy, by far the oldest dog in the facility.

Her gray face hit me first, then the slow arthritic rise to greet me. She did not get very far, and instead lay on the concrete floor trembling. I offered her a pat through the chain link door and went to move on to the next. My heart, however, had different plans, and dropped an anchor to the floor. I could not move. Her cage card read "owners moved to Florida".

I looked at Trish, and asked if we could transfer her immediately. Even though it was closing time, her face lit up and she hustled to get the paperwork ready. Forms were signed and Chrissy was gathered up. The RCACP staff waved goodbye, wished us well, and off we went to Angels of Assisi.

We had not planned on adding a dog to our already full adoption center that day. On the drive to 415 Campbell Avenue, I imagined how the scene would play out at Assisi upon our arrival...

I will walk in with this unexpected, senior dog, who will most likely need medical care of some sort, and launch immediately into her story: "Can you believe the owners moved and did not take their dog, blah blah blah... ! I could not leave her there, blah blah blah..." Deb will look at me and ask "what have you done, Lisa!" and then look at Chrissy and get all melty. Tammy will get misty eyed and nod her head up and down. Bobbie will take one look at her, give her a smooch, and get busy on intake, all the while talking a blue moon streak. Aaron, as usual, will be designated dog holder, empathizer, and listener- he is super good at that :). Jenny will say "Lisa-aaaaah!! Where are we going to pu-uuut this dog?!?" as I hold my hand up to her face and ignore her. Meanwhile, Zach will hustle to get a place ready for her, even though I gave him absolutely zero notice of a new dog in his kennel area (I'm working on that Zachary, promise). Dr. Spangler will get to work on listening to heart and lungs, dream about a day when we have more healthy and highly adoptable dogs in our own building, and then shrug and get back to taking extraordinary care of the newest one. And my partner in crime will give Chrissy her best smile, the one that lights up her eyes and shows off her dimples, be thankful, understanding, and offer any help that we need.

And that is exactly how it went down.

Fast forward to a text message sent to the most wonderful foster mom, Jane. "I have the oldest dog in the western hemisphere that needs a foster home" Jane's reply: " thought I was the oldest fart in the western hemisphere? No? At any rate, I'll pick her up in 2 days, send a crate. Can't wait to meet her".

The fact that Angels of Assisi has the staff, volunteers, and supporters that are willing and able to help dogs like Chrissy, is a fact not lost on me for one second. Seeing the daily struggles of fellow rescuers makes us all the more aware of how lucky we are. No matter what the age or condition of a pet that enters our facility is in, you all step up every time, and for that we are forever grateful.

Here is your latest rescue, an old gal who was ditched by her owners when they moved to Florida. But you know what? She's going to be just fine, and together so are we.

This handsome fella was turned into the Roanoke pound a few weeks ago. Here he is on intake.

And here's what happened to him....

Bishop was one of the first lucky dogs to benefit from the new volunteer program. Check out how a very dedicated and talented photography team worked their magic with the shots below. They sent these photos out over the intent, with a little description and some personal observations about him.

Happily, another volunteer saw his photo, fell in love, and offered to foster him. Bishop was transferred to the long term foster program through Angels of Assisi, and is doing great. His foster mom reports he is house trained, gets along with her dogs, and is a total bed hog.

Bishop could have been another statistic, but instead he is benefiting big time from the volunteers in our community. He is alive, he is well, and he is absolutely enriching the human lives that he touches. Good for you, big man. Next step, an adoptive home to call your own.

Thanks to all that took an interest in Bishop, and thank you especially to the RCACP staff for welcoming the volunteers with open arms. This could actually turn out to be a whole lotta fun ♥

The Whole Village-y Thing At Work

Little Sunshine was sent to Angels of Assisi by fellow animal rescue friends in Montgomery County. At a mere 8 weeks old, she spent the last 4 weeks of her life tied to a tree without any shelter. Animal advocates stepped in, and she was saved.

Here she is: warm, dry, and apparently with a food bowl that runneth over.

Another friend, Hope (of High Hopes Dog Training) knew of a family that was looking for such a pup, and connections were made. We're delighted to report that Sunshine went home on Friday, never to be tied outside again. She now has the chance for a new life, and it looks like she has already made a difference in the lives of her new family as well ♥

The staff and volunteers at Angels of Assisi need, support, and appreciate the collective efforts of our partners and friends in the rescue world. Groups working together do more for the animals than any one entity could ever do alone, and we are eternally grateful for you all.

It is a fact that in the right formation, the lifting power of many wings can achieve twice the distance of any bird flying alone.

And Then There Were Four

On November 16th, we learned about 4 blind Chihuahua mix dogs that were turned in at the Roanoke pound. Calls were immediately made, and an Angels of Assisi rescue hold was placed.

The four are litter mates, and 9 years old. They came to the pound by no fault of their own; their human mom died a month ago, and her husband is in the hospital now. We understand he is not expected to live either.

The pups arrived at Angels of Assisi on Friday, covered in fleas and with embedded toenails. The pound staff had done their best to trim the nails that were not embedded, but unable to do anything with the toenails that needed medical intervention.

Upon arrival, we opened the doors to their traveling crates, one by one. Each dog stepped out hesitantly, but trusting. And they stole our hearts as we picked them up for the first time; although blind and scared, they each turned towards our voices and offered a kiss.

We did our best to assure them that every little thing was going to be OK, but for now they would have to settle for a new bed and a promise to find a new home. These are the best kind of dogs- the ones who have lost it all, and are grateful for anything. Our hearts melted a little more.

Along with new beds, flea medicine, and antibiotics, we mentally put a little circle of protection around them.

Yesterday, we found out there was a 5th dog from the same house. He was a black lab mix, and very sweet, a "big brother" to the 4 little ones who could not see. Apparently he had hair loss and was thin, maybe because his owners had been so ill and could not take care of him properly.

Another immediate call was placed to the Roanoke pound- we would take him. A staff member confirmed that he had indeed come in with the 4 little ones. He had been put in isolation, and she placed us on hold to go check on him. When she came back to the phone, her voice was shaking as she told us he had been killed. She was so sorry.

Why? Why had they not told us about the 5th dog? Maybe not a litter mate of the 4 little ones, but a big brother nonetheless? He could have been transferred with his family and been safe. Instead he died at the pound, separated from everything he had ever known in the world to be his. Why had not one person stepped up to protect him?

Here's why. There was no mention of him because he was killed on November 16th, the exact same day he arrived.

The "very very sweet dog who had some hair loss probably due to fleas and poor diet while his owners were sick and the neighbors were taking care of the dogs. He was really special to be so kind to the little ones who had such limited or no vision" was killed on the same day he was turned in.

With the loss of their human owners, the little family of seven is down to four. Despite everything, the remaining ones continue to trust and love, and we need someone to step in and be the big brother they lost. We can't bring him back, but we can and will ask the leadership of the pound how this happened. And we can certainly protect the little ones in his honor.

Rest in peace, buddy. The much needed change in Roanoke did not come soon enough for you.

Here at Angels of Assisi, we've made the news and been in video clips for various reasons- puppy mill rescues, topping spay and neuter records, adding wellness visits, helping animal control with court cases.

We have no idea who broke the story, but just ran across this most newsworthy You Tube video. Take a guess as to what it is showcasing, here are a few hints: the comments include "Nice Find" and 'I have an instinct that"

And there you have it! Apparently, our rarely used, downstairs toilet has really caught someone"s eye. Wonder if it is worth any money? Any eBay'ers out there?

Getting Closer

Roxie was originally adopted from the Roanoke SPCA, and at 10 months old ended up homeless at the Roanoke pound. Her owners were moving, and could not afford the pet deposit on their new place.

Good thing for Tina, a friend to many homeless animals. She spends her nights cross posting the available pets from the pound onto other websites, including the Angels of Assisi page. For Roxie, her efforts were well worth it. A family saw her photo and her story, and put in an application. We just transferred her to Angels of Assisi, and she will be going home at 3:15 this afternoon- can't wait!

Thanks to Tina, Chelsea, Teresa and countless others who work the web in their spare time for these dogs and cats. The Roanoke pound volunteer program will be starting soon, and combined with the awesome RCACP staff, the process of saving lives will be increasingly efficient.

One year ago, who would have guessed that the high kill shelter on Baldwin Avenue would have such a big turn around, and is becoming a place of hope and true shelter? And no one is more thrilled than the staff and volunteers who made it happen. Keep up the good work everyone- we are so very proud of you.

What A Difference A Day Makes

Yesterday, volunteers were allowed into the Roanoke Pound (RCACP) for the first time. The change came after concerned citizens advocated to the media, presented at city council meetings, and rallied in the streets as a united voice for the animals that don't have one.

We needed the public to know that the no kill SPCA is not the same as the high kill Roanoke Pound where 4767 dogs and cats were killed in 2010.

We asked (and asked and asked) for volunteers to be let into the building.

The public did become aware, and proved they not are so irresponsible after all. So far this year, the kill numbers are better. The stats up to September 2011 show that 2069 dogs and cats have been killed. Still far from ideal, but an improvement. The intake numbers at the pound have also decreased.

A few days ago, the RCACP announced the volunteer program, and very shortly after the talented photographer Hany Hosny went in to work his magic. Since the pound does not have open adoption hours, the only way many of these pets will be seen is through their photo on the internet.

Up to this point, the staff was responsible for taking photos of the available pets. With their many duties, it's a wonder they have done this well. But, no offense intended, many of us just don't have that creative eye, myself included. And that's where volunteers come in. Take a look.

What a difference a photo and a and few kind words can make. And all because of a volunteer who wants to help.

To all of you who went to the council meetings, to your friends and neighbors, and to the streets in support of the homeless animals, you did it. The changes have started, and things will continue to improve.

And finally, to those who have been a force standing up for these homeless, neglected and abused pets long before any media story picked it up, you hold a place in our hearts like no other. It takes a very special, strong soul to remain steadfast in the battle between right and wrong, and we're proud of you. There are people and pets over that rainbow bridge who are too.

A Biscuit Of A Different Kind

The little Corgi below is named Biscuit, but she is not a Biscuit in the term as we know it. You see, her owner is actually the one that was mistreated, and is taking a month or so to get things back in order.

Meanwhile, Biscuit is going to an Angels of Assisi foster home. She will remain there until her family finds a way to keep them all safe from harm. Fortunately, they will not have the added stress of giving up their beloved pet while making some changes, and we are looking forward to the reunion.

Sometime in September, five emaciated, abused, terrified pitties were dropped of at the Franklin County pound. The Franklin County Humane Society and Angels of Assisi stepped up and saved their lives. One of those dogs is now my foster dog.

Heath was terrified when I first met him - he nervously licked my nose and then flinched when I raised my hand to brush my hair out of my face. It was so clear that he desperately wanted to trust people, and that there was a playful puppy inside him somewhere, but because his first year of life was filled with abuse and neglect, everything terrified him.

He was so scared that he peed when I first took his picture a few days after he'd been rescued. Dogs are amazing, though - in the past few weeks, he's begun to realize that people mean treats and food and head scratches and all the good things that he and his buddies have deserved all along.

A family in North Carolina has applied to adopt him, and they're just thrilled to meet him next weekend. Still a little timid around strangers? Not a problem! A little bit slow to warm up at first? That's cool! They're so excited to meet him, and it sounds like a perfect match. This is why I love rescue - he'll be thoroughly loved on by his 9 and 11 year old human sisters, and they've already started collecting a pile of toys for him.

Looking at him as he is today - in love with my dogs, romping around the back yard with them, so tickled to have bones and peanut butter Kongs to chew on, and always ready to jump up in my lap for a quick love fest and a nap, I can't imagine the world without this awesome dog.

Rosey was transferred to Angels of Assisi this afternoon for medical treatment. Her skin sores are from flea bites and must be very uncomfortable. Despite everything, she is a sweet girl and even let a few cats show her who was boss through their kennel doors.

Thank you to Roanoke City Animal Control for partnering with Angels of Assisi- it has been wonderful to work with you and we appreciate all your hard work.

We can't wait to see her heal and become as beautiful on the outside as she is on the in. As always, donations to the Biscuit Fund are appreciated and support dogs like Rosey.

Addressing The Elephant

This past weekend, the Roanoke No Kill Coalition held a peaceful rally for the animals that are housed at the Roanoke Pound (RCACP).

Here are some facts:

While wholeheartedly supporting the event, Angels of Assisi did not initiate the event.
A few Angels of Assisi employees and volunteers helped plan / attended the event.
Many other community members not associated with Angel of Assisi also helped plan / attended the event.
The rally was held to increase community awareness of the high kill rate at the RCACP, the need for volunteers at the RCACP,. the lack of exercise, socialization, and medical treatment given to the animals at the RCACP.

We at Angels of Assisi applaud the efforts of these caring community members. There were photographers, groomers, singers, nurses, teachers, computer technicians, moms, dads, and kids represented. All with one heart for the homeless animals in the building down the road from the rally.

In their free time, these good folks foster, adopt, transport, email, and network animals. And they want to do it more. They want to rescue them from the Regional Center for Animal Control and Protection, and we do too.

The staff at RCACP has been very helpful, and it must be hard for them to see the numbers and photos circulate. They are also trying to save the animals, and through it all remain professional and cheerful when we call or email with questions about specific pets, and we appreciate them very much.

The road to change is rarely easy, especially when the leaders are not paving the way. But we're getting closer, and we can do this.

Thank you to all who came out last Saturday. You have our support and utmost respect. Angels of Assisi is behind the Roanoke No Kill Coalition and it's members 110%; always has been, always will be. Hope to see you again soon.

How many of us as kids brought home a stray animal? Finding one was almost magical, and the joy of carrying that precious cargo home was mixed with a solid determination to talk The Parents into keeping it.

I grew up in late 1970's in the suburbs of Chicago, possibly before they were actually called suburbs. County roads quickly turned from dirt to pavement, and houses popped up almost overnight in the middle of soybean fields. That meant one thing to us kids- lots of extra lumbar and building supplies at hand to use for forts.

One afternoon while running the neighborhood, I found a dog. OK, not even a dog-dog, but the most beautiful German Shepherd on the planet. It was very hard to find a name that would do her justice, but I settled on Princess. Kind of dreading the The Parent Plea (those usually did not go my way), my friends and I fixed her an awesome fort of her own. We dug out a big hole, and cut down tall grasses to line it with. Not just any tall grass, mind you, but the kind that has gone to seed - we figured those fluffy ends would add cushion and a bit of style.

To the cushy and stylish hole, we found lumber and constructed a shield that protected her from the wind, and our Princess abode was complete. We faithfully kept her water fresh and fed her 2 times a day. In return she ran, played and swam with us. When we were tired, she dropped down in the empty fields and watched the clouds with us. When we had to go home, she actually stayed in her makeshift dog house and waited for us. She was our best friend.

Days turned to weeks, and still no Parent Pleas had happened. You see, I had a secret weapon- my Uncle Norm was coming for a visit. To those who do not know, Norm Mason, founder of Angels of Assisi, is my uncle. In him I had a steadfast and reliable animal advocate. On his visits, he was the one who built me bunny hutches, loved my guinea pigs, and gave us our family pet, a beagle named Missy.

On Uncle Norm's big arrival day, we proudly brought Princess home. My mother was all "we are not having any more dogs in this house!" while Uncle Norm said "Now, now Bev, let's get a good look at her" and then thoroughly agreed that Princess was the best thing ever.

To keep the peace, we took her back to the fort, and gave Norm a few days to work his magic. I remember leaning over the vent in my bedroom so I could hear him talking to my mother, his sister. "Come on Bev, it's just a dog, and a nice one at that."

During the visit, I did my chores like crazy, and even practiced the piano without being told. All this to soften up the Parents into getting Princess. I actually hated playing the piano, and had been taking lessons for years. I remember Norm watching me thoughtfully, then going to ask my mother why in the world she was wasting her good money making me play, because I really was not that good. She responded that maybe he was right, and I could stop lessons anytime. I hopped away from the dreaded piano in delight thinking "My god! He really is a miracle worker! Free at last!!"

We worked on easing Princess into the house, but like all good things, Uncle Norm's visit had to end. And so did the Princess era. My dad ended up finding her a home through work, and that was the end of that.

To this day, Norm continues to be a steadfast and reliable animal advocate. Can we do a bunny rescue with around 65 rabbits with mange? Yes. Can we take in 103 dogs and cats from a double wide trailer tomorrow? Yes. Can we take a baby cow still drinking from a bottle? Yes. Can we take a blind old sheep? Yes.

In fact, it was not that long ago that Norm was at Harmony Farm Sanctuary building yet another new bunny hutch. He still likes guinea pigs (ask my daughter), and he is responsible for many a family getting new pets - over 5000 actually.

And the best thing about Norm? He'll hate it that I gave him one ounce of credit for any of this. But for me and the animals in our community, he's working that magic through hard work and creative ideas that have saved the lives of many.

Picked up as a stray, this gentle giant made his way to Angels of Assisi last week. Botetourt Animal Control brought him to us for an immediate medical evaluation, and to get him started on the road to recovery.

So far, consistent meals on raised food bowls and a big bed have done him wonders, and we are all half in love with him. A great big shout out to the good Animal Control Officers taking care of the animals in Botetourt - we think you are the best!

These are the words of Goldie's foster mom, Toni. Goldie came to us from a high kill shelter needing a safe place to rest her weary bones, and she's found it.

What a difference a bath, some good food, and an abundance of love can make. To each and every foster home in the Angels of Assisi family, we are eternally grateful for the work and TLC you pour into the animals that fill your homes and hearts.

The best people in the world don't shout their good deeds from the tops of mountains, but instead move them diligently and lovingly in their own place and time. For animals like Goldie, you continue to make all the difference in the world, and for that, we love and respect so very much.

I adopted a Russian blue mix (Hippo) about a year ago, and I just wanted to thank you for bringing this perfect (though a little crazy) cat into our lives. He is the most loving cat that we have ever had and he makes me laugh every day!

He is definitely more dog than cat - he greets me at the door, hugs me with his webbed feet and is a love-bug. (He did eat a Christmas ribbon last year and had to have emergency surgery to remove a 32" ribbon from his intestines, but otherwise, he has been perfect!) Thanks so much for enriching our lives!

Benji was one of 103 animals rescued from a single house last fall, and he was the most timid of all the dogs. Patty, a wonderful Angels of Assisi volunteer, has spent a lot of time with him, coaxing him out of his kennel, sitting with him, talking to him, and taking him for walks. She is his bud, and one of the few people he has ever trusted. Yesterday she had the bittersweet job of saying good-bye, as Benji went home.

Benji Biscuit, we wish you well, buddy. You did not deserve one thing that happened to you, and you did not deserve to spend a year of your life in the adoption center. Your new home has a big yard and a soft bed, and you'll be happy. Thank you for patiently waiting for this day to come. And thank you to Patty for making the wait so much easier.

We appreciate each and every volunteer who comes in to the adoption center and works with our dogs and cats. You bring them life and a sense of hope, and you are absolutely making a difference.

Don't be dismayed at goodbyes. A farewell is necessary before you can meet again. And meeting again, after moments or lifetime, is certain for those who are friends.

Last week, volunteers from Bedford Humane Society, Franklin County Humane Society, and Solstice Sanctuary joined forces to rescue a little sheep, now named Angel.

This was not just any sheep, but one abandoned at the now closed Holy Land USA in Bedford County. Apparently, they moved, and left this little gal behind. She's been on her own for a quite a while, and she's blind.

Julie, Julie, Julie. Where to start...

Julie caught the heart of Angels of Assisi volunteer Jamie last year. She was at a high kill pound in southern Virginia with only a few days left before being killed. Could Assisi please, please, please! take her? And since Jamie is, well, Jamie- dedicated to the animals in her heart- we said sure. Send her on up.

The little pit bull terrier bounded into the clinic and adoption center, and never really stopped bounding the entire time she spent with us. She is a bundle of energy, and volunteers and staff worked hard to channel that energy in the right direction.

This involved keeping her away from most of the other other dogs in the adoption center, except for a few that she got along with. Jamie and Sarah, some of our most devoted dog walkers, worked with Julie and took her on long hikes- she loved every minute, and the energy continued to pour out of her.

I will always remember Julie as she looked when you went through the kennels to get to her run. She was in the very last one on the right side, and as you walk through, all the dogs will give a shout out and look for a treat. Julie was the only one who sat perfectly still, her head completely cocked to the right side, and you could tell she was sizing you up: "Whatcha here for? Is it me? Are we going somewhere? Because let me tell you, I Am Ready!!"

A few weeks ago, Tammy of Angels of Assisi made a connection with the Virginia State Police, and learned that pit bulls are becoming more and more useful in the drug detection program. She invited them to come take a look at our dogs, and the meeting went well.

We learned that they look for dogs with high energy (Julie). We learned that they look for dogs with a high drive to play and seek out toys (Julie). We learned that it does not matter if the dogs get along with every other dog (Julie). We learned that they look for dogs that need a job (Julie).

After meeting (Julie), they agreed that she just may fit the bill. And so, the girl that is always ready for anything, left for training. She got a bath, a serious pep talk, and bounded out the same door she bounded into last year. We know she will bound into training and a her new job with full enthusiasm, and with all our hearts wish her well.

Thank you to Jamie, Bobbie, and Sarah for teaching her basic commands- that increased her chances of getting into the program tremendously. Thank you to Tammy for always thinking of ways to improve the lives of the animals in our community. Thank you to all who embraced the little pit bull who had her moments, but believed in her no matter what.

I will always keep Julie's readiness to take on anything and anyone in my heart. Go get 'em girl. We are so proud of you.

Grace was saved from the Roanoke pound last week. Her intake photo was pretty horrible, but she did gain weight during her stay there and came out a bouncing ball of energy.

This past weekend the Biscuit Reunion was held at Blue Collar Joe's, and it was awesome to see some of our old friends.

One of the best parts of the day was seeing little Frost, the beagle that started it all. Most of us know the story of the Biscuit Fund, but let's go for it and take a trip down memory lane...

Frost and her beloved sister Scout were found in a ditch, suffering from horrible mange. The skin infections were so bad, it actually made them look like burn victims. The infestation smelled like yeast, and they affectionately became known as "the biscuits".

With some medical care, time, and whole bunch of TLC, they recovered. The Biscuit Fund was started in honor of them, to help other pets suffering from neglect and cruelty have access to medical care and the opportunity to become rehabilitated and adopted into loving homes.

Frost has blossomed into a wonderful little dog. She is very busy each and every day, roaming her yard, digging holes, gnawing on sticks, and diligently keeping up with the ever important task of looking for a weak link in the fence. Bushes serve as secret forts, and you'll often find various toys hidden there.

She's a lover of pizza, and will try and sneak up on tables and counters. Whenever the opportunity arises, she will grab an inside toy and high ball it outside as fast as she can. If you try and get it back from her, the glint in her eye shines even brighter. There is no way you will catch her to retrieve it, but she is so dang cute you've got to give it a shot.

In the middle of her busy day, (beagles have a lot going on, you know), she'll stop to give you a sniff, a nod, a "Hey- what's up? You know I think you're the best, right?" and then she will get right back to the task at hand- usually with tail up and nose to the ground.

Although she lives with several other dogs, she's got a BFF in a girl named Karma. They are pretty much attached at the hip, and seldom run out the door without a shared toy hanging out of their mouths. The forts belong to them. They romp and play all day, and Karma will throw a paw over Frost's back to solidify the deal that nothing will ever separate them.

When the day is done, Frost is done. The busy, busy girl suddenly turns into a snuggle bug and will curl up next to you and rest. Watching her sleep deeply after a hard day's work just kind of melts your heart with admiration for who she has become.

Frost, Frosty Paws, Beagle-ina, Biscuit, Counter Walker, Stealer of Toys and Pizza, whatever you'd like to call her, she will always be known as the inspiration for the Biscuit Fund. Hundreds of animals have been helped because of the generosity and outpouring of support for this fund.

To me, Frost is also an inspiration for everyday life. Keep busy and work hard. Have a little fun along the way. It's OK to joke and tease people, and always stop to give someone a "Hey- what's up? You know I think you're the best, right?" throughout the day.

Pizza is always good, as are secret forts; in the human world some might refer to them as caves. Keep your best friend close- throw a hand over that shoulder and let them know that nothing will ever separate you. And at the end of the day, sleep well, knowing you worked hard and were good to those around you.

Little did any of us know on the day that Frost was brought to Angels of Assisi that lives other than hers would be so changed. Carry on Frosty Paws, we know you've got a full day ahead of you, and we'll continue to be inspired by your example.

Sweet Pea

Sweet Pea was brought to the Roanoke pound several days ago. We were told that her toenails were so long she could not stand up, and that she had so much matted hair on her back end that she had a hard time going to the bathroom. She was brought in with 4 other dogs. The owner returned the next day and picked up the other 4 dogs, and left Sweet Pea behind.

So.... this little dog was in such bad shape that she could not stand up upon arrival to the pound. And the next day, 4 dogs were returned to the very same owner. This leads to a few questions- first of all, really?

Second of all, if the dogs were surrendered, ownership became transferred to the pound. When the former owner returned, were the dogs adopted back? If so, was it through the pound? We have been told all pound adoptions are funneled through the Roanoke Valley SPCA. Were the dogs merely returned to the owner, or adopted?

While we do not know the answers to the above questions, we do know few things. The staff at the Roanoke pound is working under the direction of the policies, procedures and leadership in place, and it's a hard job. They absolutely did ensure that Sweet Pea was cleaned up, and I am sure she appreciated it very much. She was transferred to Angels of Assisi today, and is settling in well. She is very scared, and seems to have some medical issues- we'll know more soon.

Meanwhile, there is a an entire community working hard to save little ones like Sweet pea, and ya'll are appreciated more than words can say. Thank you.

This little guy was brought to Angels of Assisi this morning. He appears to have been on his own for some time, as he is very thin, has horrible ear infections, and bad teeth from poor nutrition. A good Samaritan found him on the side of the road in Salem last night after he was most likely hit by a car. His face is very swollen with a possible broken jaw.

He was started on pain meds and IV fluids at Angels of Assisi, then transported to Dr. Carter in Botetourt where he is receiving x-rays and steroids to help reduce any brain swelling. A special thank you to Brittany who will be keeping a watchful eye on him throughout the day. He'll need every positive thought and prayer there is.... hang in there buddy.

No worries, Wendy sweet-talked her dad into taking her (he can never resist that daughter of his!).

Wendy picked up the sweet dog from the pound. Her name is now Rosa. She will be transported by the wonderful Erin Silks in 2 weeks.

And so, another life saved. Thank you Teresa, Jess, Wendy, Wendy's most awesome dad, Erin, and the never say never folks at the Franklin County Humane Society. We call you heroes, but know that you are so much more than that to one sweet dog named Rosa.

Little baby Norma arrived at Harmony Farm Sanctuary last weekend. She is 6 weeks old, and tame enough to ride in the back seat of a truck. She was rescued shortly after birth suffering from dehydration and heat stroke. Since then she has been bottle fed and nursed back to health by a kind lady named Lynn.

Norma will spend the rest of her life safe and sound at Harmony Farm Sanctuary. It is not often that we see babies at the farm, and we can't wait to watch her grow up ♥

Pugsley arrived at Angels of Assisi last Thursday. He was originally adopted from the Roanoke Valley SPCA as a puppy, and returned on July 26th to the pound side of the building (the Regional Center for Animal Control and Protection). He had been adopted to someone who lived in an apartment, and the arrangement was not working.

Although spending almost 40 days in a kennel without access to outside play time, Pugsley is well mannered and a happy-go-lucky guy. He gets along well with other dogs, and is patiently waiting for a new home. And did we mention he has the most adorable face and ears?

He is ready for adoption and holding interviews everyday at Angels of Assisi between 2 and 6 pm ♥

A huge thank you to Trish, Vickie, and Candace at the Regional Center for Animal Protection and Control for helping out with Pugsley. We appreciate you.

This photo is part of the owner surrender records on 2 adult dogs and 7 puppies brought to Angels of Assisi from Botetourt County Animal Control over the weekend. They were covered in fleas, smelly, scared, dirty..... and wonderful, all at the same time.

And here they are: meet Meemaw, grandmother to the puppies. She is scared but very sweet, and will let us pick her up although it seems like she has had few people show her any kindness.

Maggie May is also very sweet, and when you pick her up she will rest her head on your shoulder.

And, finally, a random puppy from the same group, Marcy. Who is ridiculously cute.

Maggie May and her puppies will be heading to foster soon, and we are sure Marcy will be adopted quickly. The dog that really needs some extra TLC is MeeMaw- we don't think she has had much of anything in her life, and that needs to change. For starters, she now has a name, is free of fleas, and clean. But we can certainly do better than that.

Botetourt Biscuit

Pax was picked up Saturday in the middle of a busy highway in Blue Ridge. Apparently he was weaving in and out of traffic, then flopped down in the middle of the street from exhaustion. Animal Control Office Kevin Crowder rescued him and took him to Emergency Vet Services.

We appreciate the good folks at EVS for examining him, giving him a good meal, and keeping him overnight. He was cleared to go Sunday morning, so we picked him up and and were off to Angels of Assisi.

After arriving at the clinic, we let him cruise around the waiting room to get the feel of the place, while we got his bed and medications ready. It also gave us a chance to get some photos.

These show his eye infections, long toenails, the tumor growing on his back and the one dangling from his left back leg. They don't show the nest of fleas and how he limps when walking. We estimate his age to be 11 or 12.

Pax is another dog that will benefit from the Biscuit Fund, and he will stay at Angels of Assisi until a foster or adoptive home can be found. It's interesting that out of the entire upstairs waiting room and clinic, he chose this place to rest when he arrived on Sunday.

We moved him from the statue to his own little room with a soft bed in the clinic, but he certainly still has angels watching over him, in the form of staff, volunteers, and supporters. And for that, we thank you.
