Russell County, Virginia, one of our favorite places in the state. Last week we welcomed a truck load of animals coming in on transport for treatment. Because of the distance, they arrived Sunday night so we could get right to work Monday morning, and get them back home late Monday night.

When we say transport it means that these animals have already been rescued- from dumpsters, from abandoned homes, from the streets- and have homes. They just need a little extra help with affordable veterinary care.

And when we say veterinary care, these days it's spay/neuter and then some- including dental work, mass removals, and parasite treatments. The photos below show a little fellow named Tippy who was finally able to get the mass on his bottom removed, and we can bet that both he and his owners are feeling much better.

We're grateful to our medical team for thinking outside of the norm and giving these lovely animals their all. It's usually a surprise as to what ailments or injuries will await the team on transport days, but we know that they'll give it their best to help them heal.

The lack of access to veterinary care is the most significant animal welfare crises affecting owned animals in the United States. Millions of pets do not receive adequate veterinary care simply because the costs are too high, and many are suffering or end up in overcrowded shelters. https://avcc.utk.edu/avcc-report.pdf

Thanks to our wonderful supporters, these pets won't be part of those statistics, and instead are home, safe and sound.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This morning, Sweetie went into surgery. Spaying is the most common way to treat pyometra as with spaying a cat, the uterus and ovaries are removed. Typically, a cat’s uterus weighs less than an ounce. Sweetie’s uterus, at the time of surgery, weighed 2.25 lbs, full of cysts, fluid, and bacteria.
An awful smell wafted from him and filled our entire upstairs, and his little legs were dense with matted fur.

After his sedation set in, the clippers came out and we discovered the cause of the smell- he had such horrific and extensive mats on his legs that they had literally almost severed his foot off. We attended to the mass infection immediately, and shaved his other legs down along with the rest of him. Underneath the filth we found a lovely little fellow, who we now call Freddy Biscuit.
We lost Ferdinand today. The calf who was hit by a car 2 weeks ago, the one who never regained use of his back legs despite all of our efforts, the one who captured the hearts of our community.

#FerdinandtheStrong had a full 2 weeks of good nutrition, medications, and physical therapy at Harmony Farm Sanctuary. His first few days were full of baby steps as he worked to move his front legs and started to eat and drink on his own.
We had various ways of getting him into an upright position, including using bales of shavings, slings, and hammocks. He enjoyed his time up, and would wiggle his front legs in anticipation and the knowledge that being upright meant snacks were on the way.

Try as we might, Ferdinand never gained any strength or movement in his back legs. Radiographs did not shed any light on what could be wrong, and as time passed the realization that he was not going to walk again slowly and painfully sunk in. Acceptance is indeed a small, quiet room.

Over the last few days his front legs lost their voluntary wiggle, and his body started to shut down.

This morning we made the heartbreaking decision that the time had come to say goodbye. Through our tears, his deep dark eyes never lost their shine, and that is how we will choose to remember this innocent and precious calf.

Thank you for pulling for him- from the cheers coming out of the lobby on his trips to Angels of Assisi, to strangers stopping us in the store to inquire. If love could have saved him, he would be forever safe in the fields at Harmony. Instead, he'll hold a quiet corner of our hearts.
Yep, that's right... there are four cute puppies in that banana box. These Yorkshire Terrier mixes came into the clinic to visit our veterinarians for an exam and to receive their first round of vaccines and dewormers. They each did a wonderful job and as a reward, they spent time playing with the veterinary assistant while their siblings each had their exam. It was a pleasure meeting Sweetie, Raven, Loki, and Dolly, and we can't wait to see them as they grow up!
Gaston, a Sphynx, came into the Community Pet Clinic last week to get his vaccines up-to-date. When he arrived, he arrived in style...on his mom's back! Gaston's mom had brought him in a backpack carrier complete with a bubble for him to see the whole world through. There were breathable holes where you could stick your fingers through and pet him too. It was a pleasure meeting Gaston and checking out his cool ride!
Severely malnourished, River was living in poor conditions. Although we cannot imagine what River has been through, we only know that she has a brighter future ahead of her. Just upon our first interaction, although timid, she was coming to us for scratches and leaning into us while receiving them.

The first step for River is providing her with the nutrients she needs and bringing her up to a healthy weight. Our medical team will design a customized feeding schedule and get her started on it right away. While the road to recovery for River will be long, the Angels of Assisi family will be there with her every step of the way!
His new mom fell in love with him when she was pet sitting for a friend. He is a barn cat and was living among other cats, however, his presence would not allow the other cats to eat. Since she had fallen in love with him, she decided to take him off her friend's hands and bring him to her barn, where he could roam around (which he loves to do).

He has a curious intuition with lots of love to give so we can see why she fell in love with him. He kept seeking attention during his exam and even as we were administering him his vaccinations. We wish him the best of luck in his new home!
We see your typical pet carrier, laundry baskets, cardboard boxes and more, but yesterday we saw one of the coolest cat carriers ever. Stella and Jack arrived in style for their annual check-up in their own "cat bag", of which their mom made just for them.

These bags had a hole for their head to poke out so they could see the world and another hole for their tail. Their mom even designed it to have holes that would open up for their paws to stick out when trimming their nails. How cool is that? We think Stella and Jack's mom should go into business making these bags. Don't you?
This morning, Chet came to visit us for his Therapy Laser treatment. On his lower leg, Chet has a lick granuloma that was made as a result of licking repeatedly. Chet's mom has been bringing him into the Community Pet Clinic three days a week for his laser treatment that has been showing positive results.

Chet walked into the clinic with a festive collar on and knew exactly where to go. He rolled right over for his treatment and received lots of belly rubs in return. His mom says he has been on a diet recently, but don't worry as Chet LOVES his green beans!

Maggie (formally Annabelle) arrived at Angels of Assisi back in July when she was rescued by the Humane Society of the United States from a severe cruelty situation down in Jones County, Mississippi.

Although Maggie is an older dog, she doesn't act like it. She loves to meet and play with other dogs. She met her match with her new family in August and it was forever. Her mom says that Maggie's favorite activities include: going for walks around the neighborhood, begging for treats, and snoozing on the couch. We are so happy that everything worked out so well for Maggie and her new family!
If you don't remember, Rosie first arrived at Angels of Assisi on October 1st when Animal Control brought her to us. She had been picked up as a stray and was very malnourished. Weighing about 19 pounds at the time, Rosie was skin and bones.

Today, Rosie looks so much healthier and has already gained 10 pounds. She gets excited and wiggly whenever someone comes to meet her and if you do, you better be prepared to receive lots of kisses and licks. Her dad says that she has a tendency to be clumsy, but we say that just adds to the cuteness! We are so ecstatic to see how far Rosie has come from the day we first met her to know, and we can't wait to see her as she grows up with her family.

They receive all lost/found and stray animals for our community. At the time, they were overflowing with cats and Gertrude, who was picked up as a stray, was one of about thirty cats that arrived at Angels.

A few days later, after going through our intake process, Gertrude found her new mom. Just 24 hours together, and Gertrude's new mother says they were already completely in love with each other. "She is so sweet and cuddly. I wish there was more on her past because she definitely has the ability to pick up on anxiety attacks. I struggle with sleeping due to, sometimes, severe nightmares. Last night was no exception, and Gertrude immediately just knew what to do. She climbed up onto my chest, purring into my ear until I woke up and calmed down. She prevented what would have been a full blown attack and a very sleepless night. I am so thankful to have found her and cannot wait to enjoy kitty seniority with her!" We are so happy that Gertrude and her new mom found each other as it seems like it was meant to be.
This past weekend at the Craig County Fall Festival, Cammie, Kallie, and Natalie braved the chilly air and held a 50/50 raffle and took donations for the animals at Angels of Assisi. In the end, they raised almost $400!
Yesterday, all three girls stopped by the Adoption Center, not only with the money they raised, but with towels, harnesses, and lunch for the staff. We truly have incredibly thoughtful and generous youth in our community and we at Angels of Assisi are lucky to call Cammie, Kallie, and Natalie our friends.
We don't know what happened to her, but it's possible that she was hit by a car.

When she arrived at Angels of Assisi, we took an x-ray that showed multiple hip and transverse processes of lumbar vertebrae fractures. She was in pain. We immediately started her on medicine and fed her lots of good nutrients including hay, fruit, and veggies to help her heal. Lady Di's favorites are kale and blueberries.

Lady Di has been with us for three weeks now and while she still has recovery time ahead of her, she has come a long way. Before, she could not use her back legs as it was too painful and would crawl around on her front feet. Now, she has slowly started hopping around again using her back legs. This is such an improvement and we are so ecstatic for Lady Di.
This morning we welcomed a new face to Angels of Assisi, whom we are calling Rosie. She was picked up as a stray and brought to us by Animal Control. We may not know Rosie's history, but we can tell she is very malnourished. Rosie has recovery time ahead of her and we have designed a feeding plan to help get her back to a healthy weight. Although she is very timid, Rosie loves to give the occasional tail wag and body wiggle. We can't wait to get to know her better as she heals.

Both Shadow and Jade visited the Community Vet Clinic this week to get their vaccines updated and to receive a wellness exam too. They both came from a husky rescue and even though they look like twins, they are of different ages.

While at the clinic, they both behaved well, but didn't want to leave each other. It is always special to see the bond that has formed between two animals. We will see Shadow and Jade in a year when it's time to get their vaccines updated again!

Bahama, now known as Luna, stopped by the Community Pet Clinic today with her dad for a wellness exam and vaccines. Her dad told us that Luna spends time with her furry friends at the dog park three times a week and hangs out with the roommate daily.

We also found out that she LOVES peanut butter! We ended up giving her a little treat after her exam for being such a good girl. We are so happy that everything turned out so well for Luna and her dad. Happy tails all around!
Daisy, Benji, Toby, and Hickory all had lots of fun playing and socializing with our volunteers yesterday. These dogs were just 4 of the 190 animals that we recently took in from Lenoir County SPCA who's shelter took on severe damage from Hurricane Florence. We were fortunate enough to have cleared the shelter of all the animals and brought them to safety before the storm hit.

Yesterday consisted of lots of belly rubs, tug of war, tennis balls, and of course treats! Check out some of the photos below showing just how much fun they all had. Stop by the Adoption Center any day of the week between noon and 6 pm to visit them.
Meet Telly and Tubby. These two pups along with 188 of their buddies were almost left behind and in severe danger at a North Carolina animal shelter directly in the path of Hurricane Florence. The employees there were advised by Emergency Management to evacuate the animal shelter due to the potential for structural damage from Hurricane Florence.

We received a call yesterday morning from the shelter staff begging for help and we had to respond. The Angels of Assisi team headed down to Lenoir County SPCA with our rescue truck and were able to clear the shelter to bring the 70 dogs and 120 cats on their way to safety. They arrived back yesterday evening and after receiving a good meal, they all settled in for the night.

It was a day of training for Rocky as he learned clicker training, an easy method of positive reinforcement. One of our staff members, Bobbie, who is an ABC Certified Dog Trainer and an ABC Certified Shelter Dog Trainer was teaching a fellow staff member clicker training to use with Rocky, a 5 year old Shepherd/Terrier/Pitbull mix.

The last time we saw Piper, she was a little pup, but now she is a young lady. She even looks just like her mom too. Piper stopped by the Community Pet Clinic this week to get her vaccinations updated. We were excited to see just how much she had grown and of course to get all of the puppy kisses we possibly could.
Piper and her family came from a puppy mill in West Virginia that Angels of Assisi assisted the Randolph County Humane Society, the Humane Society of the United States, and another animal shelter with last June. In total, Angels of Assisi took in 22 dogs and 13 cats from the rescue. These animals were not only living in inhumane conditions, but they were very under socialized.

We can happily say that almost all of the cats and dogs have found their forever home since arriving at Angels of Assisi. Soon we will be able to say all the animals from the WV puppy mill have been adopted!
Ziggy and Louie are a bonded pair which means they need to be adopted together. They have been together since they were pups and have been inseparable ever since! At 7 years young, both boys still have a playful side. Ziggy tends to be more of the leader with Louie following him wherever he goes. When they aren’t playing, both are very calm and love to lay around, especially curled up together. These guys enjoy the little things in life…being outdoors, laying in the sun, and taking walks. They are both house and leashed trained and their foster says they are well behaved out in public.

Loonie, who has been with us for a couple months now, had plenty of energy to get rid of. Of course, Amanda wanted to play with Loonie, but couldn't figure out what type of toy he liked. She tried different tennis balls and stuffed animals, but Loonie had no interest in them.

As minutes went by, Amanda gave one last attempt at trying to find a toy that Loonie liked and guess what...she found one! It was a yellow football shaped toy that had a squeaker in it. He enjoyed it so much that he'd sit in front of Amanda, waiting for her to throw it.

After running back and forth in the sun, Loonie eventually expelled all his energy. Not truly knowing how big he is, all Loonie wanted to do was sit in Amanda's lap and he most certainly hopped his way up there!
