Shelter Enrichment

The adoption center cats got a new colony area yesterday, equipped with cat tower, pretty pink hammock, and our favorite cleaning guy. Ryan is often caught having conversations with the cats when he thinks no one is listening. The kitties hear him loud and clear though, and that's what matters most.

Rest

Pepito takes a nap in his kennel at Angels of Assisi. It's always amazing to us how the dogs in our shelter ask for so little. It's equally amazing to see the teamwork of staff and volunteers working together to enrich their lives as much as possible, as they wait for real homes and families.

Sleep well, Pepito, tomorrow just may be your day.

Sleep Over

Daisy is benefiting from our shelter enrichment program, and left on Friday for a weekend sleep over. Her host family has learned that she is house trained, crate trained, and has excellent manners. She does not get on the furniture, stays out of the trash, waits politely at the door, and knows basic commands.

We knew she was a good girl, but this added information is very helpful in getting her adopted. Thank you to Crystal Dupree for all the help with Daisy; you have made a tremendous in her life! The shelter enrichment program at Angels of Assisi is made possible only with the help of our wonderful volunteers, and we cannot wait to see their continued progress.

Teamwork

Thank you to the team from United Healthcare for all the donations, along with the best girt of all-  time spent with the adoption center animals. We appreciate you!

I think if I've learned anything about friendship, it's to hang in, stay connected, fight for them, and let them fight for you. Don't walk away, don't be distracted, don't be too busy or tired, don't take them for granted. Friends are part of the glue that holds life and faith together. Powerful stuff.

Art

Art is an Angels of Assisi volunteer, and his main mission in life is to spread sunshine and TLC to the kitties in our adoption center. He is living proof that everyone has something to contribute to the cause, and we appreciate his time and efforts tremendously (as do the felines!).

Thank you to all who lend your hearts to the pets in our adoption center- we love what you do, and the missions of Angels of Assisi would not be possible without you!

It's funny how, in this journey of life, even though we may begin at different times and places,
our paths cross with others so that we may share our love, compassion, observations, and hope.
This is a design of God that I appreciate and cherish.

Brought To You By The Letter H

This sweet hound girl was brought to Angels of Assisi by Botetourt Animal Control. She spent her first night at Emergency Vet Services, and when we picked her up she had a hard time walking due to mammary tumors.

Besides the soulful eyes, notice anything else about her? Check out the right ear, it has been freeze branded with the letter H. Freeze branding is done with a combination of dry ice and anhydrous alcohol, mixed to a desired temperature of -71 degrees Fahrenheit. The brand is dipped into the mixture, then pressed to the ear for about 35-40 seconds.

We are not sure what the original H meant. But we do that know that as soon as she she recovers from her surgery, it will stand hope, health, home, and happiness.
Welcome to your new life.

It’s probably my job to tell you life isn’t fair, but I figure you already know that.
So instead, I’ll tell you that hope is precious, and you’re right not to give up.”

And To All A Good Night

Our building on 415 Campbell Avenue is a busy one, but at the end of the day things quiet down nicely. Clinic animals go home, floors are swept and mopped, surgical packs are sterilized, paperwork is finished, and some adoption center animals go to permanent or foster homes.

Many, however, are left at the center, and as they settle in for the night all is remarkably still- a huge contrast to the hustle and bustle during daylight hours. As they snuggle in their beds and are perfectly quiet and good, we give them a final treat, and a mental promise them that tomorrow will be another day, and we will never, ever give up on finding them a home of their own. We thank all of the volunteers for helping these promises come true- we have had record breaking adoption and foster numbers over the summer and fall. Keep up the good work!

Whispering 'it will be happier'..."

Day Dreamers

The cool thing about being best friends is that you can make big plans even if there's only a slim chance in hell that they'll ever happen.

Adoption Guarantee

Angels of Assisi is the only adoption center in Roanoke that offers an "adoption guarantee", meaning that no healthy or treatable pets will be killed once in our care. This also means that if you cannot keep your adopted pet, for any reason, that pet is guaranteed a place in our adoption center until a new home can be found.

Clyde is one the 114 pets that benefited from the guarantee in September- he is headed to his new home and his new kids and his new toys and his new happily ever after today. Good luck buddy, it was a pleasure having your back while you needed it, And if you ever need it again, we'll be here.

Some of our greatest historical and artistic treasures we place with curators in museums; others we take for walks.
