A Good Friend

Nona Nelson of the Roanoke Times has a strong and kind voice for the animals in our community. She is a huge supporter of rescue work, and we all enjoy her blog, The Happy Wag, very much.

Nona and her husband Phil lost their beloved rescue greyhound, Dexter, this morning. He suffered a brain aneurysm and was taken from them far too soon. I experienced the sudden death of my dog, Smokey, due the same thing last summer.

We'll never what is worse- losing a beloved pet very suddenly, or walking them through a prolonged illness. Either way it hurts like nothing else, and we send Nona and her family every good wish there is.

Rest in Peace, Dexter, you are loved very much.

We Have a Secret

We have a secret, you and I
that no one else shall know,
for who but I can see you lie
each night in fire glow?

And who but I can reach my hand
before we go to bed
and feel the living warmth of you
and touch your silken head?

And only I walk woodland paths
and see ahead of me,
your small form racing with the wind
so young again, and free.

And only I can see you swim
in every brook I pass
and when I call, no one but I
can see the bending grass.

  1. Dogs are one of our best friends. We cannot say that they are animals as we treat them as one of our family members. They are a good part of our community.
